POSSE x Sara Mugnes

Words by Venn Miles.

The significance of intentional and thoughtful approaches to the creative process cannot be emphasised enough. In the realm of artistic expression, both Danielle Mulham, the founder and director of POSSE, and HAKE artist Sara Mugnes meticulously consider every facet of their creative journey, showcasing a deep dedication to purpose and intentionality.

These two delve into the nuanced aspects of their craft, discussing the recognition of intuition as a guiding force, embracing risks, and maintaining openness to unconventional ideas. Acknowledging the dual nature of excitement and apprehension entwined with relying on their gut, these artisans demonstrate a profound understanding of the dynamic interplay between instinct and rationality in the creative sphere.

In essence, their conversation unfolds as a journey through the art of embracing unexpected outcomes as stepping stones for personal and artistic growth. Summing up their perspectives concisely, we’ve put together a brief but revealing glimpse into the richly nuanced and contemplative world of artistic creation thriving both at POSSE and HAKE.

Can you describe why having a considered and thoughtful approach with your artistic process is important to you?

DANIELLE: Having a considered and thoughtful approach means that you have taken the time to think deeply about what you’re creating and why - there is meaning behind it - it has intention and purpose. There is so much thought behind every decision I make - whether it’s what button to add to a blouse or which muse to use for one of our campaigns - every tiny detail is considered. Nothing is ever rushed; I always take the time to think about what I want the final outcome to be and how this will be achieved - I find this is where the creativity really shines through.

SARA: As my work is deeply personal to me it is important that I have a considered and thoughtful approach to creating. I will normally base an artwork from an emotion that I’m feeling or trying to express. Through this process each piece is a thoughtful and reflective experience, unique to that moment in time.

Having the ability to be considerate and intuitive with decisions involves a deep connection to one’s emotions and inner self; How do you exercise your ability to tap into this side of yourself?

DANIELLE: This is an ongoing process and one that I am slowly getting better at with age. My surroundings are everything to me. It truly comes down to the basics - natural light, nature, and fresh air - I need these three things to tap into a state of mindfulness. My best ideas emerge when I allow myself to unwind and disconnect from external sources - on a long walk, enjoying a cup of coffee or sitting on my verandah. As a creative, creating regular moments to do nothing in quiet and solitude in your daily routine is so important. Giving myself this space allows for my creative process to become more fluid and productive.

SARA: It’s definitely hard sometimes and it does take time. I think learning to be alone with yourself, without distractions, is a really important practice. It helps you to face your thoughts and fears and understand yourself better. Also, spending time in nature helps ground myself and reminds me to trust my intuition.

How can you recognise when your intuition is leading you in a new and exciting direction

and how do you then follow that pathway?

DANIELLE: My intuition has always been the guiding force in my decision-making at POSSE, especially within design. I am passionate about taking risks from both a design and creative direction standpoint in order to keep things fresh and exciting for our customers. I am genuinely very open minded, and always open to new and exciting possibilities. Sometimes, intuition can lead to unconventional ideas or solutions that may not seem obvious at first, which is why I avoid being too rigid in my creative process and am willing to explore new directions.

SARA: I think that your intuition will always lead you in an exciting direction no matter what. Sometimes it may lead you sideways and around in circles but it will always get you there in the end.

Relying on intuition can oftentimes be a bit risky, do you enjoy this aspect of it or does it

scare you?

DANIELLE: A little bit of both. I like to balance intuition with research and data, as this combination can lead to more informed and successful decision-making. Ultimately, following your intuition in a new and exciting direction involves honing your awareness, building trust in your instincts, and being willing to explore uncharted territory while remaining open to opportunities for growth and improvement. Sometimes, your intuition may lead to unexpected outcomes. Instead of seeing these as failures, I like to see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Analyse what went wrong and adjust your approach for future decisions.

SARA: It can be risky following your intuition as most of the time the outcome is uncertain. I do enjoy this aspect of it, although it can be scary, as it can lead you down a path you never would have gotten to otherwise.

How would you describe your work in three words?

DANIELLE: Feminine, Timeless, Elegant.

SARA: Intuitive, Meditative, Expressive.

There is so much thought behind every decision I make - whether it’s what button to add to a blouse or which muse to use for one of our campaigns - every tiny detail is considered
